Austrian pianist David Helbock belongs to the generation of jazz musicians who are heading off in their own individual directions, pushing the boundaries, radically re-configuring our understanding of what old and new music is, re-aligning composition and improvisation, and challenging common pre-conceptions about style and personality. Not every pianist is able to risk the formidable challenge of making an inward journey without the musical record of that sojourn to sound ponderous and heavy going. The concentration and imagination, accuracy and power of expression, musicianship and plain technical skill needed to pull it off successfully is beyond the reach of most. However, David Helbock is no ordinary pianist. He has the flexible technique, large portfolio of nuance, and is a deep enough thinker to emerge from plumbing the depths of heart and mind without sounding over-effortful not the least because he is also possessed of a wry wit and subversive charm. In fact, when Helbock shifts from frantic virtuosity to lyrical expansiveness can be noted the true mettle of his technique and musicality. David Helbock played tours and recordings with different projects in countries like the USA, Australia, Mexico, India, Brazil, and all over Europe. The current trio of the pianist, who was awarded the Austrian „Outstanding Artist Award“, released their album "Into the Mystic" in 2016 for the prestigious ACT label.
