Long-running lineups are a rarity in jazz, but pianist Marcin Wasilewski's trio have played together since they were students in the early 1990s, and their ability to catch and amplify each other's thoughts reflects this. The group is one of the brightest stars of the Polish jazz scene, recognized for their unique talent in blending tradition with contemporary sound. It combines the grand tradition of the challenging piano trio tenet and creates their own distinct sound in doing so. Marcin Wasilewski Trio is considered one of the most acclaimed and unique jazz formations of its generation, and it has garnered worldwide recognition. Their very first record “Komeda” (an homage to Krzysztof Komeda) became one of the most widely commented debuts of the year. “Spark of Life”, released in 2016. is the new album of the Trio. The fourth ECM album for the Wasilewski Trio features a special guest, the lyrical Swedish saxophonist Joakim Milder, whom the Poles came to know through performances with Tomasz Stanko’s Litania project. As ever, the Wasilewski trio balances original material – intensely melodic new tunes by Marcin (including two variations of the beautiful title track) – with a daring range of covers, embracing Herbie Hancock, the Police’s “Message In A Bottle” and Slawomir Kurkiewicz’s arrangement of a composition by Grazyna Bacewicz, and reinforces its status as one of the most resourceful groups around.
