Widely considered one of the most important European improvisers currently on the scene, Portuguese saxophonist Rodrigo Amado is a master of the instrument with immaculate technique and fascinating expressiveness of sound, embracing all the freedom that free jazz and improvised music allow him. Frequently included in lists of the best jazz musicians in the world, Amado likes to collaborate with his free jazz and improv idols. In this new quartet, named The Bridge, he brings together three of his strongest longtime influences, all leaders in their own right: German master pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach, one of the founding fathers of free jazz, with a career spanning almost sixty years and countless key formations in the history of European free jazz; Norwegian double bass wizard Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, an improviser who has been at the forefront of creative music since the 1990s; and legendary American drummer Gerry Hemingway, who, since the late 1970s, has accompanied Anthony Braxton, Cecil Taylor, Derek Bailey, Anthony Davis, Ray Anderson, and Wadada Leo Smith, among many others. A true luxury quartet that released 'Beyond the Margins' last year on Trost Records, an album that serves as a calling card for what we’ll see at this unmissable concert. This is a quartet whose name really represents – not just a direct homage to Sonny Rollins and his 1962 album – but also a bridge between different languages, backgrounds, and generations, all united through improvisation.
